Definition

Form of illustration where the main goal is to convey a visual representation of a design, idea and/or mood for use in movies, video games, animation, or comic books before it is put into the final product.

History

It may have came about from like automotive design or as part of the animation industry. Both industries had need for the people even if the term had not come into use yet, not till the early 1930’s by Disney animation.

concept artist

A concept artist is someone who generates a visual design for an item, character , or area that does not yet exist. It would be more likely limited for film production, animation production and more recently video game production. A concept artist may just be used for just making artwork or just to be a part of a creative team to come up with ideas and then go from there.

Materials

In just recent years we started to use technology for the artwork needed for concept art. Software such as Photoshop or Corel Painter has become more easily available so its used commonly for the concept art.

Styles

The concept art ranges from photorealistic meaning using technology such as computers and etc. using pixels and such, to regular painting techniques using paintbrushes and drawing and sketching. Later the drawings, paintings and whatever painting techniques are made realistically as required.

The average lest experienced concept designer makes (with at least 3 experience) generally earn about $57, 665, while developers with over six years experience an average of $94, 525.With statistics as of Jan 6, 2010.
