A storyboard artist is a person who plans out how a film or animation is going to turn out before doing all the hard work first. People don’t just make movies and not plan them out, storyboard artists basically make the movie before it’s actually made. To become a Storyboard Artist there’s a lot of creative skill involved. They mostly doodle and freelance design. There is no real restriction on what the artist does unless the director or client sets them in a direction. The job can have some tight schedules so that means lots of long hours and night work.

Storyboard Artists have to illustrate the narrative, plan shots, and draw panels to demonstrate action and maintain continuity between scenes. They may need to revise and update their work to reflect a changing script or comments from the director, producer, or client. They have to be able to present the storyboards for production, including indications of dialogue, character performance and camera moves. They could be asked to produce their work either as rough or cleaned up drawings, depending on the requirements of a particular production.

To make this happen they must be film literate and have a good understanding of layout, composition, sequential drawing and editing. They need to be able to work as part of a team or work independently. For most projects the artist needs excellent drawing skills and the ability to adapt to a range of styles. They have to be able to follow established designs and produce consistent work. They should have good communication skills because they may be presenting the work.

Storyboard Artists have to have many qualifications and experience. A storyboard artist requires an associate’s degree. Storyboard artists come from many backgrounds and their talent is often instinctive.
